My name's Jake Bourey, and I've dedicated a significant portion of my life to music and deciphering the science behind its beauty. As you can guess from my blog's title, I'm especially passionate about hip-hop. I post and review the best songs hip-hop has to offer, old and new. Most are in the “underground” genre, considering that’s where the vast majority of hip-hop's true art resides these days.
After a long time of listening and reflecting, I’ve finally come up with my top 5 hip-hop albums of the year. Really though, Macklemore did a lot more for hip-hop this year than what most people realize.
1) Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist
2) ¡Mayday! - Take Me To Your Leader
3) Kendrick Lamar - good kid m.A.A.d city
¡Mayday! - Everything’s Everything
This is the third song I’ve posted from their ridiculously amazing album Take Me To Your Leader, and I’m probably going to post more. I’ve been listening to this album on repeat for about a week. I can’ remember the last time I liked an album this much. It doesn’t have a single average song. To make things even better, one of the weaker songs Death March, was remixed and completely redone with some solid features, and now it’s an incredible song. I’ve been following Mayday!’s music for quite a while and I have their older albums, which are very enjoyable, but this new album of theirs completely changed my perspective on them. If you haven’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend you do.
This is one of my more favorite songs from the album. The chorus really ties the whole song together exceptionally well.
“Everything’s everything, truly I don’t give a fuck”

¡MAYDAY! - Devil On My Mind
This is an amazing song with three distinct sections, which keeps the song extremely fresh and interesting throughout the entire piece. Hardcore rapping, followed by an incredible guitar solo (could have been longer though), and finishing with a lot of trippy/artisy shit. The lyrics are also pretty damn profound as well.
I have been listening to Mayday!’s new album Take Me To Your Leader for the past couple days nonstop. I can’ remember the last time I liked an album this much. It’s most likely going to be the best album of 2012, and I’d be surprised if it isn’t. There isn’t a single song on the whole album I would rate less than a 8.5, and quite a few of the songs, such as this one, absolutely blew me away on multiple levels.

¡MAYDAY! - Roaches
I have been listening to ¡Mayday!’s new album Take Me To Your Leader for the past couple days nonstop. I can’t remember the last time I liked an album this much. If you don’t at first understand the premise of the song, let me explain. The MC’s of the group are Wrekonize and BernBiz, and they use the English language to its fullest. They produce truly beautiful lyrics for every song they do. They describe life in terms of roaches, specificity joint “roaches”…as in sometimes life provides you with good times where you live happily off of full joints, and other times where you struggle and only get by off of roaches. It’s a reflection on life’s constantly changing nature, and how you can still be thankful “for the bad times, [since they teach you] to appreciate” whatever you have in life. Even if that means living in a shitty apartment infested with “roaches”. The most basic pleasures in life (like joint roaches) are potent in nature, and their highs can be truly appreciated on a fundamental level.
I can relate to this song way too well. It’s kind of ridiculous that it essentially describes my current life 100%. Once again I’m reminded from ¡Mayday! and Strange Music that hip-hop doesn’t have to suck.
