Killer Mike - Reagan (prod. by El-P)

If you haven’t yet, you should check out my song review for Reagan.  It’s my favorite song off of Killer Mike and El-P’s outstanding collab album R.A.P. Music.

“But thanks to Reaganomics, prisons turned to profits

Cos free labor is the cornerstone of US economics

Cos slavery was abolished, unless you are in prison

You think I am bullshitting, then read the 13th Amendment

Involuntary servitude and slavery it prohibits

That’s why they giving drug offenders time in double digits”

Killer Mike – Big Beast (ft. Bun B, T.I. & Trouble)

Big Beast is my second favorite song off of Killer Mike’s outstanding 2012 album R.A.P. Music, my favorite song being Reagan. The stark difference between these two songs is very apparent.  He can spit intelligent political raps just as well as he can rip motherfuckers to pieces with his crushing flow.  It perfectly exemplifies Killer Mike’s superb versatility, and serves as an important reminder that rappers who sound the same on every track simply aren’t skilled or creative enough to create more dynamic music.  This is a fundamental problem for one-dimensional hip-hop genres such as ‘hood rap’.  If a rapper only raps about money, hoes, and weed…it gets old pretty fast…especially if every rapper in that genre is doing the exact same thing.

Killer Mike - Reagan (Prod. by El-P)

When I first heard that Killer Mike and El-P were teaming up for a collab album, I was extremely surprised and excited.  I didn’t think it would live to my expectations though…turns out I was wrong.  Not only is this Killer Mike’s best album (which is definitely saying something since all of his previous albums are pretty damn solid), it’s easily one of the best hip-hop albums of the year.  El-P’s production is top notch throughout every song, and Killer Mike’s lyrical content is as potent as ever.  This particular song is favorite off of it.  Killer Mike spits lyrics with such a strong message you can’t but help listen to it a second time.
