My name's Jake Bourey, and I've dedicated a significant portion of my life to music and deciphering the science behind its beauty. As you can guess from my blog's title, I'm especially passionate about hip-hop. I post and review the best songs hip-hop has to offer, old and new. Most are in the “underground” genre, considering that’s where the vast majority of hip-hop's true art resides these days.
KRS-One - A Friend
KRS-One is one of the unsung legends of hip-hop. He was one of the originators of the genre, and had a huge influence on hip-hop’s development in the 80’s…which obviously means A LOT. Unfortunately, most people who claim to be “hip-hop fans” don’t even know who KRS-One is…at least from my experience. He has made many classics throughout his extensive career, which includes over 25 albums. A Friend was recorded over 15 years ago at this point. 90’s hip-hop unarguably went lyrically hard on a pretty consistent basis, even the mainstream songs…especially compared to this day and age of glorified ignorance. I’ve listened to this song so many times throughout the years it’s somewhat mind boggling. A Friend is one of my most played songs of all time, and my overall favorite song by KRS-One. This is off his solid 1997 album I Got Next.
“I send this record to the well respected. Friends that I’ve collected, I hope I am what you expected.”
