My name's Jake Bourey, and I've dedicated a significant portion of my life to music and deciphering the science behind its beauty. As you can guess from my blog's title, I'm especially passionate about hip-hop. I post and review the best songs hip-hop has to offer, old and new. Most are in the “underground” genre, considering that’s where the vast majority of hip-hop's true art resides these days.
Tech N9ne - Blur (ft. Wrekonize)
Strange Music seems to be getting better and better at an exponential rate. I’ve been a fan of Tech N9ne and his independent label Strange Music for years, but within the last couple years everything Strange Music has released is fuckin’ phenomenal…and 2012 is by far Strange Music’s best year yet. ¡MAYDAY!’s album Take Me To Your Leader is still my favorite hip-hop album of 2012. ¡MAYDAY! (the hip-hop group Wrekonize is part of) also just released their new EP Thrift Store Halos, which I like even more than Tech N9ne’s latest EP Klusterfuk. This is saying a lot since Klusterfuk is one of Tech N9ne’s overall best works, and it’s also definitively one of the best hip-hop releases of 2012 (in my top 10). Blur is my favorite song off of Klusterfuk.
Strange music, above all other labels at the moment, are the strongest force behind hip-hop fighting back. They bring so much intelligence, creativity, and originality to their music it inevitably makes you realize just how boring and uncreative most mainstream music is.
