My name's Jake Bourey, and I've dedicated a significant portion of my life to music and deciphering the science behind its beauty. As you can guess from my blog's title, I'm especially passionate about hip-hop. I post and review the best songs hip-hop has to offer, old and new. Most are in the “underground” genre, considering that’s where the vast majority of hip-hop's true art resides these days.
Forest Punk - L.A. Skylights
Forest Punk is officially the first winner of Hip-Hop Fights Back’s new weekly follower created music competition. Click on the link if you’re not up to date with what this new series is.
Forest Punk is a 21 year old aspiring hip-hop artist from Los Angeles, and a long time follower of Hip-Hop Fights Back. He says that L.A. Skylights is “a tale of a young rebel’s life in the city of angels, where all is not as it seems, but all is possible!” SoundCloud Download Link
When I first listened to this song yesterday it only had 60 plays, and it was uploaded over 7 months ago. It’s disheartening to see such talent go so overlooked. What I like about Forest Punk’s style is that he effortlessly adapts his flow to multiple different genres. His lyrics are also really damn clever. He has songs that cover everything from chill acoustic laced beats to dirty dubstep bangers. If you like L.A. Skylights you should also watch his music video for his dubstep/hip-hop song Be Smart.
When I asked him to give his perception of hip-hop he said, “At the end of the day all of the truth, beauty, confusion, joy, flaws, mistakes, and victories which make us who we are need to come to the surface. A new world is growing from the underground. Me and my fellow gang of mutants came from the dungeons of rap, and in the words of Tyler Durden ‘…we’re very, very, pissed off’.”
