My name's Jake Bourey, and I've dedicated a significant portion of my life to music and deciphering the science behind its beauty. As you can guess from my blog's title, I'm especially passionate about hip-hop. I post and review the best songs hip-hop has to offer, old and new. Most are in the “underground” genre, considering that’s where the vast majority of hip-hop's true art resides these days.
Killer Mike - Reagan (Prod. by El-P)
When I first heard that Killer Mike and El-P were teaming up for a collab album, I was extremely surprised and excited. I didn’t think it would live to my expectations though…turns out I was wrong. Not only is this Killer Mike’s best album (which is definitely saying something since all of his previous albums are pretty damn solid), it’s easily one of the best hip-hop albums of the year. El-P’s production is top notch throughout every song, and Killer Mike’s lyrical content is as potent as ever. This particular song is favorite off of it. Killer Mike spits lyrics with such a strong message you can’t but help listen to it a second time.
“But thanks to Reaganomics, prisons turned to profits
Cos free labor is the cornerstone of US economics
Cos slavery was abolished, unless you are in prison
You think I am bullshitting, then read the 13th Amendment
Involuntary servitude and slavery it prohibits
That’s why they giving drug offenders time in double digits”
