My name's Jake Bourey, and I've dedicated a significant portion of my life to music and deciphering the science behind its beauty. As you can guess from my blog's title, I'm especially passionate about hip-hop. I post and review the best songs hip-hop has to offer, old and new. Most are in the “underground” genre, considering that’s where the vast majority of hip-hop's true art resides these days.
Kendrick Lamar - Cartoon & Cereal (ft. Gunplay)
The first time I heard this song I was simply blown away. I listened to it for close to an hour on repeat. This is the kind of song you need to listen to in-depth before you can truly appreciate it. I’m extremely happy with how Kendrick Lamar is progressing as an artist. This is easily my new favorite song by him, and my second favorite hip-hop song of 2012. The lyrics are damn profound, and the song’s general feel is exceptionally unique.
Too often rappers simply rap and don’t explore their creative boundaries…actually, I feel like a lot rappers nowadays don’t posses much inherent creativity to explore in the first place, since the general public doesn’t seem to deem it necessary (hence how millionaire rappers like Gucci Mane and Kreayshawn exist and prosper). However, I see uncut creativity as a fundamental aspect to outstanding hip-hop. It keeps things fresh and progresses hip-hop’s evolution in a positive direction. And just keep in mind…you’ll NEVER hear this song on the radio. You also definitely need to check out the Lyrics to fully appreciate this song.
